Reading with Lyons Court

27th November 2018 By Liz Sturrock

Thank you so much to Judith Buckle, Alison, Gill and Elaine for making us so welcome at Lyons Court today. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to read with Alice, Sheila, Maggie, Ethel, Joan and Fred.

They were magnificent hosts and the children genuinely loved sharing their favourite books with them.

We plan to make this a monthly event and very much look forward to our next session. The cakes were fabulous too.

Conversations with a Veteran.

21st November 2018 By Liz Sturrock

In November, we were delighted to receive a visit from Tommy Robson. Tommy was a Corporal in the Welsh Guards and landed on the beaches in Normandy, taking part in the D-Day landings and survived the War with barely a scratch.

Tommy sat with the children for an hour, answering all questions patiently, with dignity and complete honesty. The children were transfixed.

In these two clips, you can see Tommy replying carefully to the inevitable questions from children; ‘Did you ever kill anyone..?’

Our thanks go to Tommy for a genuinely moving  account of his time in the Army.

His stories are breathtaking. An utter gentleman. It was a privilege to meet him.

Brexit Debate Event

13th November 2018 By Liz Sturrock

It was lovely to have staff and students from Ingleton Primary, Ramshaw, St. Joseph’s Newton Aycliffe, St Chad’s and St. Joseph’s Coundon get together for our cross-school Brexit Debate today.

It was equally lovely to welcome our special guests for the day too.

Dehenna Davison Fareham, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bishop Auckland, her husband John and Labour Councillor Charlie Kay made a special effort to be with us and it was brilliant to have them on board.

Dehenna, Charlie and John were on hand to give the children valuable tips on their debating skills; how to use facts to better make a point and were hugely encouraging with every single child.

The children were impeccable throughout and were a huge credit to their families. They debated confidently and persuasively but with great respect for the viewpoints of others.

Councillor Kay has consequently invited the schools to Coundon to watch Local Government in action – and we’re very much looking forward to the visit.

Mrs. Davison Fareham was equally impressed. ‘The children should be very proud of their contributions’, she shared. ‘They particularly stood out for sheer confidence’.

Huge thanks to everyone involved for making it such a special occasion. 🙂

Remembrance Day 2018

9th November 2018 By Liz Sturrock

We were delighted to be part of Evenwood and Ramshaw’s Commemoration of the Armistice Centenary this year.

The children were very proud to parade with pipers from the SSAFA to the memorial stone in Evenwood. There, using special model rifles created by Mr. Peter Marshall, our retired caretaker, the children went through several drills with rifles, taught to them by Reverend Brian, of St. Paul’s Church, Evenwood. The children sloped arms, shouldered arms and grounded arms and as they did so, vowed to find a better way to resolve differences between nations.

We were delighted to hear that ex-serviceman in attendance had been very impressed and very touched by the children’s performance. ‘They did their village proud’, it was reported.

Year 5 & Year 6 Trip to Germany

15th October 2018 By Liz Sturrock

Between the 15th and 18th of December, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Sturrock will be taking our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils to Giessen, Germany. The visit will give the children a chance to meet their partners face to face and consolidate ongoing links and establish long – lasting connections with Germany.

A link between Ramshaw Primary and the first year pupils in the secondary school  has been established by Mrs Thorns and now the link will be developed into the Grundschule and further down Ramshaw Primary classes.

We’re enormously excited – if you’d like to have a look at our planned schedule, then follow the link below.

Eden Camp

3rd October 2018 By Liz Sturrock

Yesterday Class 3 visited Eden Camp as part of their WW2 topic. The immersive displays brought history to life; allowing us to experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on the Home Front and the Front Line.

UK Parliament Week 12th-18th November

1st October 2018 By Liz Sturrock

We’re talking Brexit with the children during Parliament Week this year.

We’ve invited Helen Goodman our local MP to chair a cross school debate over Brexit.

We’ll be looking at the pros and cons and the children can decide whether or not they might be Remainers or Brexiteers.

It looks to be a lively debate and we’re looking forward to welcoming our neighbouring schools to join with us.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

28th September 2018 By Liz Sturrock

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual coffee morning, in aid of Macmillan, earlier today. Together we raised £167 to donate to the charity. We couldn’t have done it without your support and your delicious donations of cakes and biscuits.
